Georges Duboeuf understood the appeal of a good party. When he founded his namesake wine company in 1964, Beaujolais Nouveau was simply a regional French tradition, celebrated for its youthful freshness and the arrival of the first wines of the harvest. A wine industry pioneer, Duboeuf saw an opportunity to bring that excitement to a much larger audience, eventually making the annual release of Nouveau one of the wine world’s most recognizable celebrations.

His approach was deliberately theatrical, with colorful labels, elaborate launch events, and the familiar proclamation of the wine’s annual arrival, “Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!” Duboeuf helped build anticipation for a wine meant to be enjoyed young. By the 1980s, the festivities had spread from France to the United States and Japan, bringing a little French joie de vivre to wine drinkers around the world.

For American consumers, the calendar offered an additional advantage. Beaujolais Nouveau arrives on the third Thursday of November, just ahead of Thanksgiving, when food and wine take center stage. With its bright red fruit, soft tannins, and juicy freshness, the Gamay-based wine fits comfortably alongside the holiday’s varied flavors. Its accessible price also makes it an easy addition to the table.

“Beaujolais Nouveau has always been about bringing people together,” says Adrien Duboeuf, the brand ambassador and grandson of the founder. “Long before social media connected the world, Nouveau created a shared moment of celebration across continents. Today, that sense of community and participation feels more relevant than ever.”

The appeal extends well beyond Thanksgiving. With the wine trade increasingly interested in lighter, chillable red wines and less formal drinking occasions, Nouveau is particularly well suited to the moment. Its fruit-forward character and approachability make it an easy introduction to Beaujolais, especially for consumers curious about French wine.

For restaurants and retailers, the November release also offers a ready-made occasion to engage customers through tastings, by-the-glass features, and release parties. Each new vintage arrives with its own annual celebration, inviting customers to join a tradition shared across the globe.

On November 19, Georges Duboeuf’s family-owned company will mark another Nouveau release, continuing a tradition its founder helped bring to the world. More than six decades after he established the company, Duboeuf’s instinct for making wine an occasion remains remarkably modern.
